It's supposed to be safer. There are ways around it, if you know the right people.

Sure. Drink. Smoke. If you can be conscripted or--I don't know--be an earl, you shouldn't be restricted on such small things.

An earl? [ laughs. ] No, thanks. I don't need that much responsibility.

My mom's husband was an earl. Or viscount? Around that level.

[ said with mild distaste but nothing strong. ]

Not so much. Mom had a little joyride in the middle of her marriage and I'm the result of that. One of their actual kids will inherit everything sooner or later. It's none of my business.

Fair enough. I've never been interested in the family business, either, so I can't really blame you for staying out of it.
