I'm good, but thank you for the offer. I think Scrap was giving away some of those blood snacks, so I wonder if their supply is really that low...

[ he won't press. hard to go back to titan's call after being trapped in there last thursday. nodd takes what he can get his little raccoon hands on. ]

[ Yuri sits on a bar stool next to him and sighs. She'll take something like Sprite for her drink. ]

Have you been holding up well?

Sure. I'm fine. The galley was nowhere near as bad as what you were looking into.

[ the worst part of the galley (okay other than the hand sure) was the smell. ]

I haven't been in the sim rooms since before Saturday.

[ There's a small smile on Yuri's face, almost wry. ]

I know what you mean... I haven't been there either yet. I think I will go there soon though. If anything, I liked them because they gave me a chance to see things that I've never seen before.

It was the closest we could get to going outside before porting. Even here, we can't go out without the respir-thing.

[ nodd didn't know he could miss air (and water) so much. ]

Perhaps we can eventually land on a planet where we won't have to use it outside.

Do you like the outdoors a lot?

I lived in the mountains for a long time. That fresh [ thin ] air can't be beat. Also: sunshine, while we're making a wishlist.

The mountains? That must have been difficult...

[ It's so... away from civilization. Everything. ]

How did you fend for yourself?

There was a whole monastery. I learned my fighting style up there, actually. It's where I became a monk.

[ the universe's least respectable monk, but that's okay. ]

Plus, just a short, several hour donkey-cart ride to a village near the base if you needed a pick-me-up.

[ poor nodd... i hope he gets his respect one day. ]

By your definition, what is a monk? I think the definition varies...

[ She's very sure the monks she knows of do not line up with Nodd's because for one, Nodd is actually a decent person. Presumably. ]

Ahh. I suppose it means someone who dedicates themselves to building their connection with the natural and spiritual. You're supposed to follow certain vows as well, but my sect isn't too rules-happy.

[ scratching his cheek with two fingers. ]

I guess I'm on a forced sabbatical right now.

Is your sect unique because of it?

[ The hunger of knowledge grows... please feed her more. ]

I don't know a lot about the other ones. Para, my teacher, came from far to the north. When she spoke about her sect there, it sounded harsher.

I wouldn't say I'm the best example if you're looking for your average monk. I didn't start my training until I was nearly in my forties.

[ Yuri really forgot that Nodd was 63 years old. His ears should have reminded her, really. ]

That's still at least ten years... though, I don't know much about how monks train. Does it usually take longer?

[ it's all right, long-lived species like himself age slow. he's neither as wrinkled nor as wise a 63 yo as one would expect. ]

Para started as a child and most of the other monks at the Spires were ancient by the time I showed up. I spent a while just helping with repairs and figuring out the giant problem.

... That doesn't quite sound like what a monk usually does...?

I... the monk thing kind of happened with less intention than you'd think. That's enough about me. You. Where are you from?

[ sipping and staring over his glass at her. ]

Did you ever ask Gregor or Rodya about where they came from?

They work for the same company.

[ Yuri nods. ]

I'm not from their company, but I was hired for them to be their guide. The City is... It makes Strihira look like heaven in comparison.

That much fun, huh? You were their guide for The City?

Oh, no. The City is... well, it's what the entire area is as a whole. I had to guide them through my old workplace, since I was very familiar with it.
